Directions - Pleasant Hill Cemetery is located in Henderson County, North Carolina on Old Kanuga Rd about 3 1/2 miles from Hendersonville. From Main Street in Hendersonville, turn right onto Caswell Street that becomes Kanuga Street after crossing Church Street. Continue on until Kanuga Street becomes Kanuga Road. The cemetery is located on the right side on the corner of Kanuga Road and Old Kanuga Road.

History - The first burial in what is now known as Pleasant Hill Cemetery is said to be Sarah Elizabeth Barton Drake who died during the civil war around 1865.  It has been said that three women of the community helped her son Thomas  bury her on top of the hill at his home place, in a grave that he dug.  Known as the Drake Cemetery for many years, six generations of Drakes are buried here.  The land was donated to Pleasant Hill Cemetery by the Drake family.  The most recent burial appears to be Jennie Justice buried January 12, 2002.  Elizabeth Camp according to the dates on her tombstone died at the age of 107.  There were many infant deaths as evidenced by the large percentage that died up until the 1950s and 21% or 149 of the burials were for senior citizens who were greater than 80 years of age at the time of their death.

This is a listing of the graves found in my survey taken July 2002.  Documented were 706 burials however there are more as many stones are no longer legible or have disappeared.  The grave survey  taken in July 2002 is organized by surname according to the spelling found on the tombstone.  Some notes about the information first.  Each name identified on a tombstone or marker is shown in alphabetical order so there may be duplicates (i.e. if both a military marker and tombstone existed).  I did not consider location of graves and do not identify whether a husband and wife appear on the same tombstone (each is shown as a separate line).  All information below was taken directly from a tombstone/marker except for the age which I calculated.  If neither the birth or death date was shown or one was missing I show "unknown" for the age although in some case only one date was shown and this could represent an infant death at birth.  I have photographed every tombstone and provide only a few examples (see the links on the names below).    If you would like a copy of any tombstone please send me an email with the name and I will send it to you.

This grave survey was compared with that performed in 1994 by the Henderson County Genealogical and Historical Society.   See notes about differences identified at the bottom of this page.
