Baptist Church Cemetery is located adjacent to the church on a sloping hill
above U.S. Highway 64 West approximately 2 miles from Hendersonville, North
Carolina. If going toward Brevard from Hendersonville there is a Shaws
Creek Baptist Church sign on the right just past an area formerly known as
Davis Station.
History - Shaws Creek Church was
founded in 1873 by a few Baptists meeting in the home of Mrs. Lucinda
McCrary on Brevard Road who previously attended Millpond Church at Rugby on
Mills River. The first church building was located across the highway from
the McCrary home. It was a log cabin built by John Garren and Marshall Cox.
Before the door and windows were cut, Lucinda McCrary and her daughter, Lou,
crawled under the logs into the building and had the first prayer meeting.
In 1928, the present building was erected. Mrs. Lucinda McCrary, Mrs.
Rachael McCullough and Mr. Joe Bruce donated the land on which the present
building stands.
