DRAKE FAMILY REUNION SET - 41st Gathering Will Be at Pleasant Hill, August 18
An old established custom now in the second generation, the Drake reunion, will hold its 41st annual meeting for relatives and friends at Pleasant Hill Baptist church on Kanuga road, four miles southwest of Hendersonville on Sunday, Aug. 18, which has been the regular meeting place since the reunion organization was founded in 1899 by the late R. T. Drake and others in the Pleasant Hill community.
It has been the custom to meet and hold a memorial service at the Pleasant Hill cemetery, decorating the graves of relatives and friends. From there they go to the church for a morning service, after which dinner is served beneath the shady trees on the spacious grounds of the Pleasant Hill Baptist church.
The afternoon is given to special musical program, also recognizing the friends and relatives who have come from a distance.
Also recognized are the new husbands, wives and babies in the connection since the last meeting.
It has carried the name of "The Drake Reunion," as among the early settlers in this part of Henderson county were Drakes.
The late Jas. D. Drake secured a land grant from the State of North Carolina. He and his brothers were among the early settlers in this community, which is now the Episcopal assembly grounds, Kanuga Lake.
If you have not attended a Drake reunion, judging from the past, you've missed a great deal for there's always a hearty welcome awaiting you, with well-filled baskets for a sumptuous dinner, followed by a good program that will be enjoyed by all.
All relatives and friends are invited to be with the family reunion.
It has been an established custom for many years to adopt any friend into the Drake family who has attended more than one reunion.
The connection has been highly honored by the adoption of many friends of the Drakes.
Many relatives and friends from adjoining counties and out of the state look forward with pleasure to the Drake reunion, for it is here they mix and mingle with homefolks.
The present officers are: Mrs. Joe Anna Brown, president; Mrs. Lila Ripley Barnwell, vice-president; Miss Futh Reece, secretary and treasurer.
The musical program will be in charge of Mrs. Callie Drake Albea, assisted by J. M. Drake.
The officers request that the Drakes invite their friends and relatives to meet with them and come with their well-filled baskets, which have been the custom handed down to the present generation.
