A. F. Drake (The
Hendersonville News, Hendersonville, Henderson County, North Carolina 11-October-1922)
A.F. DRAKE SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES INFLECTED BY HIGHLY
ENRAGED BULL
A. F. Drake, who was attacked a month ago by an infuriated bull died Monday
night at 11 o'clock at his home on Crab Creek street after intense suffering as
a result of the injuries sustained.
Interment at Mud Creek church cemetery was made
yesterday at 3 o'clock following services by the Rev. W. M. Wilson at the
church.
Surviving are five children, John Drake and Mrs. Grant
Kramer by the second wife, who also survives, and Otis, Edward, Ernest and Oscar
Drake by the first wife. Surviving also are two brothers, R. T. Drake and Nathan
Drake, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Buckner of Madison county.
The deceased was a Confederate veteran and saw two
years of service in the war. He was 76 years old last February.
Mr. Drake was a farmer by occupation. He was born and
reared in Henderson county. Nearly a quarter of a century ago he was street
overseer in Hendersonville and was a the time a member of the local police
force.
Mr. Drake lived one month after the attack, which
occurred when he went to the pasture to get a calf. He was accompanied by a dog.
The bull made a dash for Mr. Drake, who got within about ten feet of the fence
before he was overtaken. The beast butted him in the back, knocking him down,
then tramped upon him and butted him in the breast furiously. Had it not been
for the fact that the bull had been dehorned he would have badly lacerated the
body. Several ribs were injured and the chest was badly bruised and lungs were
impaired.
The presence and interference of the dog doubtless
saved the life of Mr. Drake. As the beast was furiously pounding away at Mr.
Drake, by feed and head, the dog seized the bull and put up such a fight its
attention was given the dog instead of Mr. Drake, who managed to crawl under the
wire fence to a point of safety.
Mr. Drake bore the reputation of a very desirable citizen.

E. A. Drake (The Hendersonville Times, Hendersonville,
Henderson County, North Carolina 12-February-1909)
E. A. Drake
E. A. Drake of Pleasant Hill died Friday morning,
February 5, after two months illness. Two weeks ago he was taken to a hospital
in Asheville, where he was informed that there was no chance for his life
without a serious operation, and that even with the operation his recovery was
doubtful. The operation was performed, and for several days hopes for his
recovery were entertained; but the trouble was too deep-seated, and the end came
last Friday.
The funeral was held Sunday at Pleasant Hill, Rev. W.
A. Morris officiating. The services were attended by a very large concourse of
people who came to pay this tribute of respect to their departed friend.
Mr. Drake was a native of this county, well known
throughout the county and respected wherever he was known. He was a kind-hearted
and upright man, a good citizen and good neighbor, and had been for many years a
loyal member of the Baptist church. His place will be indeed hard to fill. He is
survived by his wife, seven sons and three daughters; the sons are Perry,
Harvey, Blaine, Eleazer, Robert, Quay and Albert; the daughters are Mrs. J. C.
Jimison, Mrs. Singleton Drake, and Miss Annie Drake. The bereaved family have
the sympathy of the whole community in this loss.
E. A. Drake (The French Broad Hustler, Hendersonville,
Henderson County, North Carolina 11-February-1909)
IN MEMORIAM by W. A. Williams
I feel safe in saying that when the sad news of the
death of our beloved friend and brother E. A. Drake, was announced, that the
people of this county never were so shocked before. It came as a great surprise
to everyone. But few of his many friends ever knew of his being sick till he was
passed from earth to his long home above.
He had been sick some two months and in spite of the
best medical aid, he gradually grew ??? worse. At last it was ??? carry him to
Asheville ??? serious surgical operation ??? last resort.
??? friends were glad to get the news that he had undergone the operation and
was much improved and hopes were entertained that he would soon be well again.
But these fond hopes were blighted on Friday morning, February 5, to get the
sad, sad message that he was dead. He was near 62 years of age and it made it
impossible to overcome the disease.
He was a man of sterling worth to his country, liked by
all who knew him, and but few men had a wider acquaintance than he. The place
made vacant by his death will be hard to fill. In fact I don't believe it can
ever be filled as he filled it. He will be missed in church work especially, for
he was a great church worker, and Pleasant Hill church will miss him for many
years to come.
He always had a kind word and a smile for everyone and
everyone liked him.
He joined the Baptist church when but a young man, and
has spent his life in the discharge of his duty to his God.
He was a great man to visit those who were sick and in
distress. I have known of him going for miles around to nurse the sick. And it
did not matter whether he was related to them or not, he was there just the
same. At one time I know of him going to Flat Rock and nursing a sick man all
night long, and then during the day time he put in full time helping a man build
a house who had had the misfortune to be burned out only a short time before.
This is only one instance of many of his acts of
benevolence.
And I repeat it without fear of contradiction, that the
place E. A. Drake left vacant can never be filled as he filled it.
But it is the Lord's way of gathering up His Jewels and
one by one we all must go. He has laid up a treasure in heaven which is
incorruptable and will never fade away. And the Lord has called him home to take
possession of it.
Let us all so live that when our work, like his, is done, we may enter into that
rest that awaits the people of God.
E. A. Drake (The Hendersonville Times, Hendersonville,

Resolutions of Respect
Brother E. A. Drake departed this life at the Asheville
hospital February 5, 1909. He was born in Henderson county April 24, 1847, and
spent his life within two miles of his birth place until eleven days before his
death. He was one of the oldest members of Pleasant Hill Baptist church. He
became a member of this church more than forty years ago when it was known as
Antioch church. He married Miss E. M. M. Folds November 19, 1874. To them were
born seven sons and three daughters, all of whom are still living, four of them
are married, six remain at home.
Mr. Drake was a devoted husband, a kind and indulgent
father, a good neighbor and a useful citizen, a cheerful giver. He was never too
busy to visit the sick and help any one in trouble. He was a consecrated
Christian and faithful to his church and Sunday school. He was deprived of the
privilege of attending his church services to some extent for some time before
his death on account of his afflictions. For some time before he died he was
perfectly submissive to the will of the Lord. His wife, children and many
friends mourn their loss but rejoice in the testimony of his life to the faith
he professed in the Saviour. Therefore be it
Resolved, That we, the members of Pleasant Hill Baptist
church, hereby acknowledge that we have lost one of our faithful members and
that we as a church do sincerely pray that each member may strive to be as
faithful in the discharge of every duty as he was.
2. That we, the members of Pleasant Hill Baptist
church, extend to the bereaved family our tenderest sympathy and pray to the
Lord that He will bind up the broken hearts and heal the wounded spirits.
3. That a copy of these resolutions be sent to both of
our home papers for publication and one to the bereaved family and one to be
spread upon the church record.

In Loving Memory
We, the W. M. U. of Beulah
church, bow with submissive reverence to the will of the Heavenly Father in
taking from among our number one of our most beloved sisters and former
presidents. On April 5, 1925, the spirit of Mrs. Eliza Drake took its flight to
that mansion Jesus said he was going to prepare for the ones who love and obey
him.
Mrs. Drake served as president of the W. M. U. over two
years, resigning the place about two months before her death.
She was loyal to her church in every respect and one of
our most efficient Sunday school teachers for a number of years.
Always willing to do her share in the work of the
church she did not try to shift her responsibility off of some one else but was
always ready to carry her part of the load.
She was a devoted Christain, a true companion and a
good mother to her six small children. Her highest aim was to train her children
to be men and women that would be an honor to their God, their country and their
mother.
Heaven has gained a member that will be greatly missed,
but our loss in her gain. Her memory will ever live in the minds and hearts of
the ones who know her.

Auto Injuries Were Fatal to Estelle Drake
The soul of little Estelle
Drake, who has been lingering between life and death since she was fatally
wounded by an automobile Thursday afternoon near the home of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Otis Drake, on the Flat Rock road, winged its peaceful flight
heavenward Friday night about midnight, thus making the first automobile victim
of the season.
Since the accident, which occurred about 5 o'clock
Thursday afternoon when the machine of Marion Mattison, of Anderson, S.C. ran
down the child, little hope of recovery had been entertained until the end came,
when a sweet little innocent four-year-old girl, the only daughter of its
parents, closed her eyes to the things of this world, being only one of the many
victims claimed annually by the Grim Reaper through his effective automobile
agency.
Human Skill Failed
Everything possible was done to restore the health to
the little girl. M. M. Mattison, the father of the young man who it is
understood is almost prostrate over what seems to have been an unavoidable
accident has done all that time and money could do in the way of furnishing the
best of medical skill and attention.
The family of the deceased is not alone in their sorrow for Mr. Mattison and his
family, it is understood, have shown signs of grief and regret over one of the
fatalities that it seems inevitably visitn this terrestrial ball untimely and
unexpectedly.
The remains were laid to rest Saturday afternoon at Mud
Creek Cemetery.
Eugenie M. M. Drake (The Hendersonville News, Hendersonville, Henderson
County, North Carolina 4-August-1922)
TRIBUTE IS PAID TO MEMORY OF MRS. M. M. DRAKE
Mrs. Eugenie M. M. Drake, widow of E. A. Drake,
departed this life July 26, 1922. She was born December 18, 1856, on Jonathan's
Creek, Haywood county. In early life she became a member of the Baptist church
at Beulah and continued a faithful and consistent member the remainder of her
life. Being a cultured Christian lady she was loved by her family and highly
esteemed by all who knew her, including children and grandchildren, two sisters
and many friends.
After religious services were conducted by Rev. Mr.
Ross, her pastor, the body of Mrs. Drake was laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill
cemetery. She was a faithful and devoted wife, a tender, kind, self-sacrificing
and loving mother, a hospitable friend and good neighbor. She loved life and
bore its toils and cares very patiently, and passed to rest without a word of
murmur of complaint, being fully resigned to the will of Him who doeth all
things well. She was truly a good woman and the vacancy made by her departure
can never be filled.
We mourn the loss of one so dear and ask that the
memory of her may ever be fondly kept. May family and friends imitate her noble
example and emulate her exemplary life, for she said, "All will be well."
Dearest sister thou hast left us,
Here thy loss we deeply feel;
But 'tis God that hath bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.
Yet again we hope to meet thee,
When the day of life is fled;
Then in Heaven with joy to greet thee,
Where no farewell tear is shed.
A Friend.
